Perception

Acrylic, Oil pastels, Print transfer, Torn book pages, 20″ x 11.5″, 2019

On the left side of the painting is lady painted in monochromatic shades of blue and white with loose, textured strokes. She is looking over her shoulder towards the viewer and is based on Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. Below her reads the word "WELCOME" in orange letters. There are simplistic yellow flowers to her right. Towards the center of the painting there are sections of orange and yellow. In the yellow section the simplistic yellow flowers can be seen again. The orange section includes the numbers "1", "2", and "3" written in blue and the word "Smile" written in black and crossed out with blue lines. The top left of the painting shows close up painting of an eye done in grayscale. It is based on Medusa by Caravaggio. The eye is painted over a black background. Above the eye reads the word "SPECTATORS" in similar orange letters to "WELCOME". Below the eye we see the aforementioned orange section becoming stairs. The word "Smile" can be seen again written in black within the the stairs. Next to this is a triangle with each corner labeled in red as "1", "2", "3" with the base of the triangle reading "Smile". This is drawn over a blueprint of a vintage style camera. Below on the lower left of the painting is a section of blue painted in loose strokes. There are simple forms of koi fish painted in orange. They are painted over torn and crumpled book pages.
